What is dry eye?

A single 12-minute session can offer significant relief to patients suffering from dry eyes and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). For optimal results, we recommend you undergo treatment every 9 to 12 months.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy for Chronic Dry Eye

IPL uses gentle pulses of light to treat the underlying causes of dry eye. It’s a painless procedure done in an examination room.

IPL targets the skin around the eyes, reducing inflammation and any bacterial growth in the area around your eyes. The light helps break the buildup of oil or other debris blocking the meibomian glands that produce oil for tears.

IPL treatments help to treat meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).

MGD is a common cause of dry eye that can become a chronic, cyclical condition. Inflammation is a root cause of MGD, and its presence causes the eyes to create compromised tear film, which leads to more inflammation.

IPL therapy is a newer treatment for dry eye. The procedure treats the underlying cause of dry eye by opening up the glands that help keep the eyes lubricated.

The outpatient procedure is generally safe. It provides better relief than other treatments but will require additional sessions for it to be fully effective.

What is dry eye?

Dry eye disease is a common condition that occurs when your tears aren’t able to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. Tears can be inadequate and unstable for many reasons. For example, dry eyes may occur if you don’t produce enough tears or if you produce poor-quality tears. This tear instability leads to inflammation and damage of the eye’s surface.

Dry eyes feel uncomfortable. If you have dry eyes, your eyes may sting or burn. You may experience dry eyes in certain situations, such as on an airplane, in an air-conditioned room, while riding a bike or after looking at a computer screen for a few hours.

Dry eye can often make eyes feel gritty and dry, and cause them to water a lot. It’s caused by blockages in the oil-producing glands in the eyelids. This in turn causes the water in tears to evaporate more quickly than normal because of the lack of oil.

9 out of 10 dry eye symptoms are caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD).

Treatments for dry eyes may make you more comfortable. These treatments can include lifestyle changes and eye drops. You’ll likely need to take these measures indefinitely to control the symptoms of dry eyes.

By using Lipiflow or IPL treatment, we can target the cause of MGD rather than just manage its symptoms, and provide relief for the patient. Lipiflow sends gentle pulses of heat and pressure to clear clogged glands, while IPL sends delicate light waves, allowing your tear glands to function normally again.

LifiFlow and IPL are a very effective treatments according to the patient’s tear dryness grade and above all it is painless. Eye set of the devices are placed on the eyelids of the patient, which the eyepieces apply with mild heat and intermittent pressure (LipiFlow) or light waves (IPL) to remove the obstruction of the glands.

86% of Dry Eye patients are likely to benefit from Lipiflow or IPL treatment. If your dry eyes are affecting your daily life, Lipiflow or IPL may be the answer you are looking for. In addition, if you have not had Laser Eye Surgery due to your Dry Eye Syndrome, your doctor will recommend you to have Laser Eye Surgery if your dry eye problem disappears after these treatments.

Immediately following the procedure, you can return to your regular activities. The outpatient procedure is generally safe.

In severe cases, your doctor may recommend additional treatments.

It provides better relief than other treatments but will require additional sessions for it to be fully effective.

You should plan to use dry eye treatment methods, such as artificial tears, between sessions of therapy. Your doctor can provide greater detail on what they recommend for your specific case.

STEP 1

At your consultation, you'll be given an eye examination and a LipiView or IPL scan, which looks at your tear film in greater detail. This only takes around 10 minutes and if you're suitable for treatment, LipiFlow or IPL can be carried out on the same day.

STEP 2

LipiFlow itself takes about 12 minutes per eye. It is a treatment that uses gentle pulses of heat and pressure to clear blockages in your tear glands. If your doctor deems it appropriate to do IPL, this process may take 3 or 4 sessions with 2 or 4 week intervals.

STEP 3

Your Meibomian glands are gently opened up, allowing your body to create the natural oils that are essential for keeping your eyes moist and comfortable.
